Overview
Uniqueen Monobenzone Cream 80% is said to contain a very high content of monobenzone, which is called monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone. Monobenzone affects melanocytes, that is, the cells that synthesize melanin and leads to the development of irreversible depigmentation. Depigmentation therapy does not restore color to vitiligo spots but reduces existing pigments to improve skin homogeneity in patients with extensive vitiligo.
There are various reactions to monobenzone treatment. Reduction of pigmentation may occur gradually or in an uneven manner; it can also be seen even on those places which were not affected by the medication. Among possible side effects may include redness, dryness, itching, burning sensation, irritation and contact dermatitis. Depigmented skin is protected less effectively against ultraviolet radiation.
Official recommendations on dermato-oncology describe monobenzone as available in 20% cream and possibly up to 40% in difficult areas. Official label of FDA Benoquin also includes 20% monobenzone preparation. I have not found any information about official approval or standardization of 80% monobenzone preparations. Consequently, the preparation, content, authenticity and instructions for use should be verified before the listing or sale of this product.
How to use
- Wash the intended treatment area gently and allow the skin to dry fully before applying the cream.
- Use only a very small amount on the areas specified in the prescription instructions. Do not apply it widely or create your own application schedule.
- Wash your hands immediately after use and keep the cream away from the eyes, lips, wounds, irritated skin and untreated areas. Monobenzone may cause permanent and uneven pigment loss.
- Protect the treated skin from sunlight with broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing. Stop using it and obtain medical advice if severe burning, swelling, blistering or a persistent rash develops.
