Overview
Benoquin Monobenzone Cream USP 60% contains depigmenting ingredient called monobenzone or monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone. Such powerful ingredient leads to depigmentation effect on pigment-producing cells which are known as melanocytes, causing depigmentation in localized and distant areas. It is worth to mention that contrary to temporary ingredients that provide whitening effect, monobenzone may lead to a permanent effect. Therefore, specialists advise applying monobenzone therapy to certain patients with widespread vitiligo since restoration of pigment in these cases is impossible.
The main goal of the therapy is not restoring the pigment in the affected area but removing it from the other parts of the skin in order to make it evenly colored. Depigmentation process is unpredictable, thus it may end up in different results including skin irregularity coloring. Moreover, the depigmentation process may occur even in non-treated areas.
Possible side effects of monobenzone therapy include redness, dryness, itching, burning sensation, skin irritation, contact dermatitis, eye irritation and increased sensitivity to light exposure. Due to depigmented skin lack of melanin layer it is vital to apply sunscreen while using the product.
How to use
- Gently clean and dry the treatment area before applying the cream.
- Apply a very small amount only to the skin areas listed in the prescription instructions. Spread it carefully and wash your hands immediately afterward.
- Keep the cream away from the eyes, lips, cuts, irritated skin and unintended areas, as monobenzone may cause uneven and permanent pigment loss beyond the application site.
- Protect the skin from sunlight using broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing. Stop application and seek medical help if strong burning, swelling, rash or persistent irritation develops.
