Overview
Benoquin Monobenzone Cream USP 40% consists of monobenzone, which is alternatively called monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone. This is a strong depigmenting agent that affects melanocytes, cells that synthesize melanin. Medical literature suggests monobenzone concentrations between 20% and 40% have been used in severe cases of vitiligo where there has been no success in repigmentation treatments or much of the body has lost its coloration.
Depigmentation therapy does not aim at restoring coloration in a previously pigmented skin area. It involves removal of the existing natural pigmentation to provide an even coloration of depigmented and pigmented areas. This process might be quite slow and vary widely among patients. Depigmentation can spread outside the application site and the effect cannot be reversed. Consequently, medical literature considers this procedure applicable only to extensive vitiligo.
Some of the possible adverse effects that may come up as a result of monobenzone include redness, dryness, burning, irritation, contact dermatitis, itchiness, and photosensitivity. In this context, it is crucial to take note of the fact that because there is less protection in skin without any color, it is imperative that no sunburns happen.
It is significant to point out the fact that the Benoquin cream bottle found in the US contains only 20% monobenzone and not 40% monobenzone cream.
How to use
- Clean and dry the treatment area before applying a very thin layer of cream.
- Spread it only over the pigmented skin areas specified on the prescription label and wash your hands immediately afterward.
- Avoid the eyes, lips, broken skin and unnecessary contact with untreated areas, as monobenzone can cause irregular and permanent pigment loss.
- Protect treated skin from sunlight with broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing. Stop use and seek medical advice if strong burning, dermatitis or severe irritation occurs.
