Overview
The drug’s main component is Monobenzone USP 20% w/w. It belongs to the group of depigmenting agents which act upon melanocytes – special cells responsible for melanin production. The drug is not indicated in the cases when the re-pigmentation of the skin patches is needed to deal with the problem of vitiligo. At the same time, the drug is applicable in the situation when the normal skin needs to be depigmented in order to create a homogeneous skin layer in case of disseminated vitiligo.
According to the recommendations for the usage of the drug, Benoquin 20% cream should be applied in case of the disseminated vitiligo when over 50% of the skin surface is affected and depigmentation is required. The drug is not recommended to use in case of freckles, melasma, inflammatory hyperpigmentation, café-au-lait macules and skin bleaching.The process of depigmentation takes place gradually and unpredictably. Depigmentation occurs not only in the treated area of the skin, but also in other distant areas. The effect is irreversible and includes such side effects as redness, burning sensation, itchiness, dryness, irritation and contact dermatitis.As the depigmented skin lacks its natural protection from sunlight, it becomes photoreactive.
How to use
- Wash and dry the skin before applying a small amount of cream to the specified pigmented areas.
- Spread a thin, even layer and rub it in gently. Wash your hands immediately after application unless your hands are being treated.
- Keep the cream away from the eyes, lips, open wounds and untreated skin, as monobenzone may cause permanent or uneven pigment loss.
- Protect the treated skin with broad-spectrum sunscreen and suitable clothing. Stop using it and seek medical advice if severe burning, swelling, rash or irritation occurs.
